A teenage driver (in a vehicle far too powerful for his young age) slammed into my vintage mailbox. I live in the historic Druid Hills area of Atlanta. Where should I go (on line or other) to find a suitable sturdy mailbox to match my Craftsman style home?

Ludwig Mies Van der Rohe, the very famous Bauhaus designer and designer of the ubiquitious Barcelona Chair, said "God is in the Details."

As for mailbox-to-be, I don't think one of those stone or brick encasements would be a welcome sight in your historic neighborhood! A favorite resource of mine is Van Dyke's Restorers (1/800 558-1234 or www.vandykes.com. They have a catalogue as well as a website with absolutely everything you need to preserve the integrity of an older home... or to give some patina to a newer one. Check out their mailboxes. There's one in particular at: http://www.vandykes.com/product/02006843/

Oh, you were so right...these are beautiful, simple and classic mailboxes. I agree with you on the brick laden mailbox...not right for a historic neighborhood.

I love the site VanDyke's restoration. I also found something there I've been coveting..a retro princess rotary dial phone..ideal for a 16 year old of mine! But do me a favor and don't tell her I ordered it until her birthday.
thanks for the good advice.

Van Dyke's is an excellent resource for anyone living in or restoring an older home. I found replacement wheels for a vintage 1940's bar cart from Palm Beach. They were an absolutely perfect match! I ended up ordering them two times, in fact; once when I first bought the cart and saw that they needed to be replaced, and again, after Hurricane Charley damaged the wheels (luckily the bar cart was spared!)
